WWE’s Top Champion is Defeated After SmackDown Goes Off the Air

Penta earned a major win on Friday night in Lyon, France, defeating WWE Intercontinental Champion Dominik Mysterio in a non-title match held after SmackDown went off the air. Despite the result, Mysterio left the LDLC Arena still holding the championship.

For Penta, the victory carried extra weight. He has been targeting the Intercontinental Championship for much of 2025, but until now had been unable to secure it. Whether this result will translate into a future title opportunity remains to be seen, but it clearly strengthened his case.

While his singles pursuit continues, WWE’s most recent plans for him suggested a different direction. Reports from earlier this year pointed to a reunion with his brother Rey Fenix, with the company preparing to bring The Lucha Bros together after keeping them on separate brands since their arrivals. Penta has been part of Raw, while Fenix has competed on SmackDown, with the split designed to give both men individual exposure before revisiting their tag team run.

Penta’s run in WWE began in January with high expectations. He debuted on Raw with a victory over Chad Gable and declared the start of a new era. Before joining the company, he was a founding member of AEW from 2019 through early 2024, where he and Rey Fenix captured both the AEW World Tag Team Championship and the AEW World Trios Championship as The Lucha Brothers.

Friday’s result in Lyon now adds another chapter to Penta’s WWE story, raising questions about whether his chase for the Intercontinental Championship will finally gain traction after months of pursuit.
