WWE NXT executive Shawn Michaels recently underwent back surgery, according to his longtime friend and fellow WWE Hall of Famer, Kevin Nash. Speaking on his “Kliq This” podcast, Nash disclosed that the procedure was to remove rods that had become twisted in Michaels’ back. He also revealed that Michaels is facing double knee replacement surgery in the future.
Nash explained the surgery was related to the back injury Michaels sustained at the 1998 Royal Rumble. “When he f**ked his back up on that Casket match, they put some rods and sht in his back, and they had to take him out because they were all twisted,”* Nash stated. He added that Michaels “woke up from surgery and was in less pain.”

In addition to the back procedure, Nash detailed other long-term health issues facing the former multi-time world champion. “Shawn needs both his knees replaced on top of that,” he said, also speculating that Michaels may have hip problems due to his legs having been “bowed” for an extended period.
The hardware removed from Michaels’ back was originally implanted after he suffered two herniated discs during a Casket Match against The Undertaker at the 1998 Royal Rumble. The injury led to his first retirement from in-ring competition at age 32, following his match at WrestleMania XIV. Michaels later returned in 2002 for another eight-year run before his final retirement in 2010.
Shawn Michaels currently serves as WWE’s Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative, overseeing the NXT brand.
