John Cena Says He’s Never Chosen His Opponents in WWE

John Cena says in his 23-year career he’s never chosen an opponent—a principle he’ll follow for his final match.

As John Cena moves through his retirement tour, set to end in December, he’s made one thing clear—he won’t be picking his last opponent. In a recent interview, the 16-time world champion shared the approach that has shaped his entire career.

“I’ve been doing this for 23 years, and I’ve never once chosen my opponent,” Cena told Justin Barrasso of the Boston Herald. “I’ve always lived by the philosophy that life will give you opportunities every single day, and you have to do the best you can every single day with what life gives you. So whoever challenges me for that last match, I’m going to give it my best shot.”

His comments come as fans and media speculate over who will face him in his farewell bout. So far, this run has included matches with Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, CM Punk, and R-Truth. His next major match is set for Logan Paul at WWE Clash in Paris.

While Cena insists he has no control over his matchups, WWE Chief Content Officer Paul Levesque has said Cena has some say in shaping his final run. The selection process, however, is handled jointly with the creative team. That means names like Gunther, Randy Orton, and The Rock remain possibilities, but not by Cena’s personal choice.

For Cena, the focus is on adapting to any challenge. He’s preparing to close out his career the same way he’s always worked—by stepping into the ring with whoever WWE puts across from him.
