Jake Hager has officially closed the book on his in-ring career and, in the process, delivered sharp criticism of AEW president Tony Khan. Speaking candidly, the former World Heavyweight Champion admitted regret over his run in AEW, describing wrestlers as “toys” under Khan’s leadership.
Hager recalled a backstage meeting that followed the well-documented conflicts involving CM Punk. According to him, Khan stormed into the room “yelling” at the roster without any of the company’s executives present. For Hager, that moment revealed the lack of control behind the scenes.
He also questioned Khan’s creative ability, claiming that while Khan was strong at introducing new storylines, he “never carried anything forward” and “didn’t know how to take criticism.” Looking back, Hager said he wishes he had been more vocal against decisions he disagreed with, particularly how Sting’s farewell was handled. “I wish I had stayed in MMA,” he admitted.

That sense of disillusionment fed directly into his retirement. Hager confirmed that he no longer even watches wrestling and emphasized that he considers himself “retired, baby.” He said he feels satisfied with what he achieved and is ready to move on.
The 43-year-old made his retirement official earlier this month. He is now running a new business venture, a transportation company called Haulin’ Oats, while prioritizing time with his family.
Despite his frustration with AEW’s leadership, Hager singled out Chris Jericho for praise, calling him the greatest of all time. “Chris Jericho is the reason that purple hat got over… He’s number one on my Mount Rushmore,” Hager said.
Hager’s career spanned nearly two decades. As Jack Swagger in WWE, he won the World Heavyweight Championship and later became a founding member of the Inner Circle in AEW. Outside the ring, he also competed successfully in MMA with an undefeated Bellator record.
