WWE Veteran Questions John Cena’s Retirement

Former WWE writer Vince Russo commented on John Cena’s retirement tour, proposing that wrestlers should retire in their mid-40s to go out on top.

WWE Veteran Questions John Cena’s Retirement

Former WWE writer Vince Russo has weighed in on John Cena’s impending retirement, suggesting that the ideal age for a professional wrestler to step away from the ring is in their mid-40s. Speaking on Sportskeeda Wrestling’s BroDown, Russo stated that this timeframe allows a performer to retire while still at the top of their game.

“I would say if they really wanted to go out on top, where they could still go and not be embarrassed, I would say 45,” Russo said. “Some guys can really still go till 45. I think when you start letting it go to like 48… that’s when you could tell a noticeable difference, but guys can still go up to 45. I mean, 48 may be fair, but when a guy like Cena is saying, ‘At 48 my body’s [done],’ that’s telling you right there.”

Russo’s comments come just days after Cena, 48, spoke publicly about the physical demands of his career. On August 14, Cena stated that his body is “screaming” at him to retire after nearly 25 years with WWE. He also noted his desire to create opportunities for the next generation of superstars.

Cena is currently on a farewell tour that is scheduled to conclude at the end of 2025. His upcoming schedule includes an appearance on SmackDown in Dublin, Ireland, on August 22, followed by a match against Logan Paul at WWE Clash in Paris on August 31. His most recent championship match was a loss to Cody Rhodes for the WWE Undisputed Championship at SummerSlam 2025.

While Cena was not present at the August 15 episode of SmackDown in Boston, it has been reported that he is reserving his final WWE appearance for his hometown in December. During an August 15 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Cena confirmed he has not chosen an opponent for his final match, though rumors have suggested potential bouts with Brock Lesnar or Gunther.

The subject of retirement age also extends to other veterans on the roster. WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio has stated he is close to retiring, and AJ Styles has mentioned plans to retire before he turns 50 in 2027.
